The retirement savings system in the U.S. is an uneven playing field. Researchers have noted for years the inequalities in retirement wealth by race and ethnicity, as well as by other factors like gender and job industry. The Society of Actuaries Research Institute released a new research report in April 2024 on racial disparities in retirement savings. The report includes a thorough review of the literature on the extent of racial disparities in retirement savings and possible causes for and correlates of these disparities, as well as detailed documentation of current differences using the most recent U.S. data.
On Wednesday, October 2nd, NIRS held a webinar with a discussion with one of the report’s authors, Dr. Christian Weller, professor at University of Massachusetts-Boston and NIRS Academic Advisory Board member. Dr. Weller reviewed the report’s findings and answered questions about the research.
